Dear Harry,

many thanks for the excellent soldering videos. Even though I have been soldering for many years I learnt many new and useful facts by watching this video.

I am also a regular visitor to your webpage. Thank you for your great help.

best regards

For some reason, I do not have the same moderator rights for the "Film Forum" as for the othet three ones. Please remove this brutal spam who can.

Hi Ivan,

I do apologize, I had set full permissions on all the other three forums, but not this one. You now have the right to edit or delete other peoples posts.

I have also given you full moderator rights, if any user needs to have posts approved. Please note that the SPAM I deleted just now is rare and I would rather not have a moderated forum in the future. But if the forum does get abused like this on a regular basis then I would require posts to be approved for a short time.

The offending user posts have been deleted and his IP has been blocked. You also have the right to block IP addreses (from the "post options" menu in any message).

If you should see anything like this again, Ivan, then I would be very grateful if you could let me know ASAP via e-mail. If you want your permissions to be changed then please let me know and it shall be done.

Very best regards from Harry

        Hi Harry,
I have already deleted some spams in the other forums. Their contents was similar, but the sender and IP address were different- a typical product of a spamming virus-robot. This feature makes IP blocking ineffective. The spams have not been so frequent to make the conference moderated up to now. I check your messageboard almost daily, so I can remove unwanted posts quite fast.
The last spam in this section was a bit different. Thank you for setting my rights.

Have you any better news according to your employment ?

VBR from Ivan OK1SIP

Hi Ivan,
I know what happened - you had been given full rights before the VIDEO forum was created. You then inherited default rights to VIDEO when it was created, but still full rights that I gave you to all other forums.

Just deleted a couple of similar messages myself, now. Ok on the IP blocking. As you say, there is not enough to worry about. But I wonder if there could be something that forbids excessive external links in a posting? or certain key words in a list?

What I want to do is to ínvent a new virus that traces SPAM and virii back to the creator, then fixes them up with a girlfriend/boyfriend to give them a real life.

As regards my job situation - nothing has changed, except the Swedish discrimination ombudsman have decided to press the case forward, which I think means that I will have my day in court Smile

Because I have been unfairly compelled to work a year extra, I should be looking at a sizeable compensation Tongue and the upper limit for legal compensation was removed one year ago Clap

He who laughs last, laughs longest!

Very best regards from Harry

Harry

I am a forum mod (global rights) on another site - not as popular as yours.  On there I was removing maybe 5 or 6 posts a day from automated spam bots, mostly from Eastern Europe - but not all  Cure is, and I assume your forum software here is pretty similar - firstly get an updated catchum.  Some of the older ones have been hacked, but the new one that the admin installed killed it stone dead.

Secondly, in the software we use (PHPbb), we can set it so that all new members' posts are read first by a mod before they are publicly posted.

I won't post a link since the forum belongs to a commercial business, but please feel free to email me if you'd like to look :)

As a matter of interest - working back to the source of a given IP address isn't always so easy - Proxy servers often get in the way etc and to be honest, any half decent wannabe chatroom hacker can EASILY hide his/her IP.  I know, I've also been a chat room moderator on one of the UK's largest chat sites.  Hacking the spammers isn't as easy as some may imagine since most have a huge amount of resources dedicated to stopping their victims hacking them back.  Best way is get a decent katchum, keep it up to date, and vet new user's posts til you trust them

Finally, assuming Private Messages on here have been disabled, would you consider allowing them?  Sometimes I feel as if I want to ask a question of a member, but don't want to look like a prize pilchard by asking in public.

Lloyd.

Hi Lloyd,
I didn't realize the facility existed, so I have just enabled it. Let us see how it goes. If it is abused then I will switch it off, but in general the users of the forum have always been courteous, helpful and considerate to others all the time.

As regards the SPAM, I am just waiting for the next occurence and I will use the IP address block-range function, then report abuse to the senders ISP. ISPs do not like having their services blocked.

If you want to post the URL of your forum then please go ahead. I am all in favour of sharing information and services for free.

Bery best regards and thanks for your concern. Please let me know if the private e-mail function is working?
